I consider myself a materialist both in the sense that I like physical objects, and that the materials with which I work are as meaningful to me as the conceptual content. Textiles (and the materials from which they are made) are a fundamental part of human culture, serving both practical and aesthetic purposes from the earliest days of human activity and playing a significant role in the development of civilization. I am inspired by this work of human hands creating textiles throughout history, all over the world.
As the world has become more mechanized, however, and digital ephemera has become entirely ubiquitous in our lives, the tactile work of human hands has become rarer and thus more precious. In my work I use traditional methods to present new ideas, frequently manipulating digital imagery in order to translate it into a handmade textile. In doing so I hope to pay respect to the hand-work of the past while making a case for its continued relevance and importance in the 21st century.
